Celentano was born in Milan at 14 Via Gluck, about which he later wrote the famous song "Il ragazzo della via Gluck" (the boy of Gluck road). His parents were from Puglia and had moved north to work.
According to urban legend, before beginning his singing career, Celentano was a student of Ghigo Agosti (European rock pioneer) during Agosti's 1955-1956 Northern Italian tour, which was also guitarist Giorgio Gaber's debut.
Heavily influenced by his idol Elvis Presley and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained hispopularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies. In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking

and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful; indeed in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best performance.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda Celentano, most notable to worldwide audiences for playing Satan in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, and Giacomo Celentano. He also often works as a host on several Italian television shows.
He has released 40 albums: 29 studio albums, 3 live albums and 8 compilations. His most famous songs are "Azzurro" (1968), with lyrics by Paolo Conte, and "Prisencolinensinainciusol" which was released in 1972.
Besides musical work Celentano engaged in cinema. In seventies he often acted in the films and made his own films. He acted in forty films, and started in 1959 with episodic roles of rock-singers. He also acted in film of Federico Fellini «Sweet life» («La dolce vita»). And certainly he sings in his films. In 70-s and 80-s he did it regularly. In that time the films were on the pick of celebrity.
In 80-s Adriano appeared as a presenter of telecast «Fantastico».
Nowadays (1999) Celentano lives 100 km from Milan secluded on the villa with his wife Claudia, sometimes repairing watches. «I have two professions, - says Adriano, - the first I learned in childhood, I'm a watchmaker. It's a pity that I didn't take the instruments, I would repair someone's watches... My second profession is actor. And it became the main. I use this profession in order to express that I believe». He has three children Rosita, Giacomo, and Rosalinda.
Adriano Celentano has been a vegetarian since 2005 and defends animal rights.
To date, the singer sold 150 million records.
